In Top Gun there is a scene where the pilots are sitting in the flight operations room; the following exchange occurs between Viper and Maverick:
Viper: In case some of you are wondering who the best is, they are up here on this plaque on the wall… you think your name’s gonna be on that plaque?
Maverick: Yes, sir.
Viper: That’s pretty arrogant, considering the company you’re in.
Maverick: [pauses] Yes, sir.
Viper: I like that in a (Contractor).
Ok, Viper didn’t say “contractor.” But do you ever wonder which paving project was the top gun (or lute) in Virginia? Since the inception of Virginia’s Best and VDOT Paving Awards, each category has had a top paving project, but there has never been a “Best of the Best” Award. That will change in 2019 as VAA and VDOT evaluate the 2018 paving project submissions.
Introducing the Golden Lute Award. Given to the top project in Virginia, it will be selected from the seven winning projects that represent each of the VAA and VDOT paving award categories. An independent panel will review the seven category award winners and make the final determination. The Golden Lute Award winner will be announced during the awards ceremony at the Mid- Atlantic Asphalt Expo and Conference in December 2019. This challenge trophy will be presented to the winner and the paving facility owner. The trophy will be passed from winner to winner over the years with the name of the winning contractor engraved on the trophy’s plaque.
To be recognized as the Best of the Best, remember to submit your paving award projects. All award nominations are due in the spring. While the 2018 nomination deadline has passed, there’s still time to start taking photos and recording data for your 2019 paving project submission.
