VAA and VDOT’s NOVA District Held a Progress Through Partnering Discussion

Since March 2020, COVID has made in-person meetings and discussions challenging. During this time, changes have occurred within industry and the Virginia Department of Transportation. One significant change for VDOT was the appointment of John Lynch, PE, as VDOT’s NOVA District Engineer. After serving several months as the acting district engineer, John was named the permanent DE in July. While he was known to several contractors working in NOVA District, not everyone knew him as Mega Projects Manager in NOVA or as the District Engineer in Culpeper. Therefore, VAA organized, and Superior Paving Corporation hosted the Progress Through Partnering discussion on September 23. John and District Maintenance Engineer Lauren Mollerup, PE, joined ten VAA asphalt producers and pavement marking members to discuss general paving and department topics. The conversation included the execution of contracts, succession planning of key positions and ways to work together.

The meeting was the first in a series of meetings and gatherings planned by VAA to reconnect and develop relationships that tackle Virginia’s transportation challenges and objectives. The next events will be the Discussion with the Department on October 13 and the Mid-Atlantic Asphalt Expo in December.
