The spring meeting of the VDOT/VAA Statewide Asphalt Cooperative meeting was held on Thursday, May 27, with over 45 participating. The meeting was again held virtually via Zoom. With any luck, this may be the last purely virtual meeting of the committee. Planning is already underway to hold the next meeting in a hybrid format if at all possible.
The meeting focused on many topics to include impacts associated with the ongoing traffic marking/paint shortage, however as has been the case with many asphalt-related meetings of late, Balanced Mix Design (BMD) took center stage. There was significant discussion regarding the research data from pilot work and the new draft specification for BMD work occurring in 2022. Presently, VDOT intends to have one exclusive BMD contract in each of the nine districts in 2022. VAA and VDOT continue to work collaboratively to ensure this new mix design process provides high-quality mixes while taking advantage of the many new technologies within our industry.
