The first R.J. Schreck Scholarship golf tournament of 2020 was held on August 6 at Bull Run Golf Club outside of Haymarket. While usually the second tournament of the year, COVID pushed the Tidewater area tournament from April to November 4. With the recent rains from Tropical Storm Isaias and afternoon thunderstorms, the fairways and greens were very soft and forgiving. This led to an impressive score by the winning team of David Branscome, Jr., Connor Leake, Jamie Bowman & Karl Fredrickson. Putting pressure on the winners was the 2nd place team of David Horton, Rob McKeever, Michael Cuilik, and Mike Cuilik. In addition to the top two teams, David Horton, Virginia Paving, won the longest drive contest, and David Stanley, Kickin Asphalt Paving & Sealing, won the closest to the pin.
New for this tournament was an auction to play six holes with Ron White of Superior Paving. Three teams—Superior Paving, Branscome Paving, and Luck Stone, paid a combined $6,000 to play with Ron. As discussed in the previous newsletter, he is beginning his transition into retirement. Not only did the three winning teams get extra shots per hole, but they were able to show their appreciation for his contributions to the asphalt industry and get a few pearls of wisdom. The funds from the auction were donated to the 2021 scholarship fund.
The tournament organizing team would like to thank all of those who played and sponsored. Because of you, we raised $16,000 for the 2021 scholarships. The next event will be held in Richmond. Watch for emails and information in the September Asphalt News for event registration details.
