NAPA mid-year meeting in review

NAPA recently completed its annual mid-year meeting at the historic Omni Grove Park Inn in Asheville, NC. The meeting provided NAPA members with two days of informative micro-sessions on legislative, engineering, health & safety, sustainability and communications efforts that are so important to the industry, as well as plenty of opportunities to attend committee meetings tasked with making decisions to shape the direction of the industry. Networking opportunities, including local craft brewery tours, a cocktail reception, and various meals were sprinkled throughout to allow the attendees to connect with one another and share information and ideas.

Some of the meeting highlights were:

Recycled Plastic Modified Asphalt: CJ Dubois of Dow Chemical Company presented on the steps that Dow has taken to understand how recycled plastics may better impact asphalt binders and mixtures. At the same time, using this process could provide a market and a feasible solution for the growing piles of household recycling material generated by cities and towns across the US;

Workforce Now—Identifying the Challenges: John Harper (2019 NAPA Chairman), CJ Potts (Milestone Contractors), and Patrick Roberts (Lehman-Roberts Company) presented on NAPA’s current Workforce Development initiative, implementable strategies for company recruitment and retention efforts, and a discussion about the broader construction industry’s workforce initiatives.

Preventing Incidents and Injuries Using Internal Traffic Control Training: Scott Seamon (Saginaw Paving) and Kelly Kanaras (NAPA) presented on effective use of Internal Traffic Control Plans (ITCPs), educating session attendees on what these are, when and how to use them, benefits of using them and a discussion on the resources which NAPA has in place for ITCP training of employees.

NAPA held committee meetings in sessions throughout the two-day meeting ranging from the Committee for Asphalt Research and Technology (CART) to the Impact Leadership Group. Overall, it was a successful and informative meeting, providing a great opportunity for networking with both new and old friends, with the shared goal of promoting the asphalt industry and its future direction.
