Over 140 delegates and guests attended the 68th VAA Annual Meeting at the MGM Resort National Harbor in Maryland. The meeting featured VDOT’s Chief Deputy Commissioner Rob Cary and Chief Engineer Garrett Moore along with keynote speeches from Dr. Audrey Copeland and Mr. Craig Parker.
The meeting kicked off on Thursday morning with comments from out-going VAA President Ed Dalrymple, Jr. Ed reflected on the accomplishments and challenges of 2018 and looked forward to the opportunities in the future. Following Mr. Dalrymple, Craig Parker – President of Silver Star Construction of Moore, Oklahoma, spoke about the need for workplace safety, reiterating several times that safety culture starts at the top of the company. To finish the Thursday morning session, Dr. Audrey Copeland – President of National Asphalt Pavement Association, gave an overview of the asphalt industry in the US and the outlook for the future. The Friday morning session was devoted to VDOT. Both Rob Cary and Garrett Moore spoke on how VDOT is changing, the funding for projects moving forward, and the partnership between VDOT and Industry.
Friday morning’s meeting addressed three very different topics. Continuing with the focus on safety, Bob Perdue of LifeNow ministries spoke about dealing with workplace injuries and death. He discussed the grieving process and what employers can do to help in the process. Ozzy Speranza of Argus Media looked into the Asphalt Crystal Ball, covering the complexities and interactions of the world oil market in the US asphalt market. Finally, Hugh Fain of Spotts-Fain (legal counsel to VAA) held a refresher on anti-trust laws for companies and organizations. Following the invited presentations, Trenton Clark – Executive Vice President of VAA, reviewed the status of VAA and the outlook for the next five years.
