While the promotion of asphalt is the purpose of VAA, the association’s core is the people who make up its’ member companies. These individuals give their time and talents to lead the association through the VAA Board of Directors. This month VAA features the two of the Board’s Directors. We hope you enjoy these brief exposés.
I am Marshall Luck. I work for the Virginia asphalt division of Allan Myers, where I have enjoyed many rewarding roles. I have been associated with the Virginia Asphalt Association since September 2013. I am also delighted to call Richmond, Virginia, my home. I graduated from the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington and am a proud member of the class of 1999. After graduating from VMI, I spent a three-year tour in Sun Valley, Idaho perfecting my fly fishing, hunting and alpine skiing skills. Upon returning from Idaho, I immediately laced up my steel-toed boots and hit the field. I started as a laborer, then an operator, grade foreman, assistant superintendent and finally a superintendent before being welcomed into the office.
Outside of Allan Myers, I sit on the St. Bridget Catholic School Advisory board, and I am a past board member of Tad’s Kids, a local organization that supports families experiencing financial hardships due to their child’s cancer treatment.
This past October, my wife Meredith and I celebrated our 15th wedding anniversary. We have two children: Marshall III (13) and Mary Ryland (10). When Meredith and I are not carpooling our children around to various sporting and school events, I enjoy relaxing on the beach, skiing, wing shooting and occasionally wetting a fly line.
Happy Holidays! My name is Lonnie Minson, and I am senior area manager for Eurovia Atlantic Coast/Virginia Paving Company—Hampton Roads. My career began working for a Hampton Roads community-based paving company, Asphalt Roads & Materials Co. Inc., while attending school in 1978. I have held various positions during my 38 years of service with Asphalt Roads. Before the acquisition of Asphalt Roads & Materials by Lane Construction, I served as a vice president of operations and owner. I now manage the Hampton Roads area for Eurovia/Virginia Paving with an experienced successful team. I have enjoyed transitioning from a small family-owned business to a large corporation with many support divisions. I am most proud of my continued relationships with public and private entities in Hampton Roads. In addition, I have been very fortunate and blessed to have mentors both professionally and personally that have made a difference in my career and life.
I was born in Verdun, France, while my father served in the United States Army. My father’s career allowed us to live around the world, including France, Germany and Japan. However, my parents grew up in the Ocean View area of Norfolk, and Hampton Roads was always our home base. During one of our returns to the area, I was fortunate to live next door to Ricky Haycox, who gave me the opportunity to work at Asphalt Roads & Materials while still in high school, and he eventually become a best friend and partner in the business I helped to grow.
My wife, Karen, and I enjoy “empty nesting” and spend most of our free time with our two golden doodles on the Chesapeake Bay. We have recently completed renovations on a home that we are equipping with all the toys to encourage frequent visits from our children and future grandchildren. We look forward to visiting our son, who is serving as a helicopter pilot for the U.S. Navy in Pensacola, Florida, and our daughter, a doctor of occupational therapy for a pediatric clinic in Richmond, Virginia. I am a very proud father.
