While the promotion of asphalt is the purpose of VAA, the association’s core is the people who make up its member companies. These individuals give their time and talents to lead the association through the VAA Board of Directors. This month VAA features the current ex officios. We hope you enjoy these brief exposes on the personal side of each director.
Scott Claud, Ex Officio #1
My name is Scott Claud, and I am the president of Colony Construction Inc., located in Powhatan, VA. I was born in Evreux, France, while my father served in the United States Air Force. Our family lived in Maine, New Hampshire, Virginia, South Dakota and Germany before moving to Powhatan in 1976. While attending Powhatan High School, I met my future wife, Cathy, and we will celebrate our 35th wedding anniversary this year. I received a Bachelor of Science degree in business management from Virginia Tech. GO HOKIES!
My business career started in Atlanta, GA, where I worked in the car rental industry for 13 years. After Cathy and I moved back to Virginia in 2000, I started my career at Colony Construction and took over as president in 2004. Currently, I am involved in estimating, human resources, asset management and mentoring our management team. Cathy also works at Colony, where we have shared the same office for almost 20 years. When I came to Colony, we had 25 employees, and now there are 170, and many are like family. Over these last 20 years of growth, we constructed our Powhatan asphalt plant in 2008, our Burkeville plant in 2012 and our newest shop and warehouse in 2019.
Cathy and I have three daughters, Brittany(31), Erin(21) and Marisa(18). We became grandparents (Papa and CC) to Lana(2) in 2019, and Brittany is due to have our second grandchild, Charlie, in October. Faith, family and hard work have always been the central part of our lives.
Ed Dalrymple, Jr. Ex Officio #2
I am Ed Dalrymple Jr., and I am proud to have been associated with VAA for over 25 years. I’m the president of Chemung Contracting Corp., and I represent the 4th generation to manage the Dalrymple Construction Companies since it began in 1902. I work with my son Ed III and my grandson Matthew Ciuros, representing the 5th and 6th generations.
I grew up in the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York. I’ve spent my life in the construction and materials industry with my father, uncles and cousins all being involved. Growing up, I hitched a ride with either my dad or one of the superintendents to work each day during the summer and after school when I could.
I attended Broome Tech Community College in Binghamton, New York and graduated with my engineering degree from the Louisianna Polytechnical Institute of Technology.
Our companies began operations in Virginia in 1994, and Virginia has been our “home” ever since.
Cathy and I live on Lake Anna and enjoy boating and traveling. We have four grown children that live in Boston, MA, Culpeper, VA and Kitty Hawk and Avon, NC. We enjoy spending family time with our kids and five awesome grandchildren.
