Recently, VAA members and others participated in a Balanced Mix Design Round Robin project. The project’s purpose was to assess the differences in test results for a “good” and “bad” IDEAL-CT Index mix. Participating labs were given samples of each mix and were asked to perform IDEAL-CT testing using their equipment. Out of 48 labs, it was determined that nearly 2/3’s had challenges performing the tests following the ASTM protocol.
While this was not the result expected, it was a significant revelation—training on the tests run using various types of equipment was needed for laboratory technicians. Therefore, VAA has scheduled a BMD Equipment Testing webinar for December 11 from 9:00am to 12:00pm. This webinar will include VTRC researchers discussing the outcome of the Round Robin and plans for future efforts. Following the VTRC presentation, VAA member pavement testing equipment manufacturers Troxler, Humbolt, and Instrotek will give overviews of their devices and then step by step training. After the training presentations, there will be a break during which attendees will be encouraged to perform the test and return with questions for the manufacturers. This will aid in problem-solving and becoming more proficient in the testing procedure.
