BMD Testing Simplified webinar huge success

As Virginia marches toward implementing Balanced Mix Design (BMD), training is critical for future success. On December 11, VAA hosted a BMD testing webinar to continue training for VAA member companies and VDOT employees. With more than 85 people registered for VAA’s Zoom Meeting platform, attendees learned about the results from the BMD Round Robin Phase 1 from Dr. Stacey Diefenderfer, P.E.—VTRC Senior Scientist and her team—Dr. Ilker Boz and Dr. Jhony Habbouche. While the initial intent of Phase 1 was to assess the variability of results when labs are given “identical” asphalt samples, the study demonstrated challenges with testing per the ASTM standard. Those outcomes lead to the impetus of the webinar.

Once Diefenderfer, Boz, and Habbouche had completed their presentation, attendees learned the correct testing procedure for three different testing manufacturers. Troxler, Instrotek, and Humbolt discussed and demonstrated how their equipment was to be used. During the breaks, attendees were encouraged to run tests on their equipment and ask the manufacturers’ questions.

A question and answer session wrapped up the webinar as attendees ask questions regarding testing, along with the overall BMD implementation plan. In 2021, VAA is planning additional training sessions. These sessions may be virtual or in-person, depending on COVID regulations. If you are a member and would like a link to the the BMD presentations, contact the VAA office.
